Plateau Mining Accident: Troops Confirm Four Deaths After Pit Collapse

Four people are dead after a sand excavation pit collapsed in Tangur community, Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, but the circumstances surrounding the accident remain under investigation.

The collapse occurred at about 2:20pm on Tuesday along a river line where suspected illegal mining activities were taking place.

Troops responded to information about the incident and confirmed the deaths.

One of the victims was identified as Mallam Fahad Aliyu. Three women were also killed, but their identities had not been established when the report emerged.

Relatives recovered the bodies for burial.

Several questions remain open.

The first concerns the cause of the collapse. The initial report confirms that the pit gave way but does not establish the precise reason.
