Plug-in solar arrives in Britain as households seek relief from rising energy bills

LONDON — Plug-in solar panels have officially entered Britain’s household energy market, giving consumers a new way to generate electricity and potentially reduce their dependence on the national grid.

The systems became legal for purchase and use across Great Britain on August 27 following changes to the rules governing small-scale solar generation.

The UK government says households could save up to £110 a year, while an 800-watt kit could provide as much as 20% of the electricity used by an average home.

The technology is designed to be relatively easy to install compared with conventional rooftop solar systems and can be used in suitable outdoor areas, including some balconies.

The launch comes as Britain faces renewed pressure over household energy affordability. EnergyUK recently warned that household energy debts had climbed to £6 billion, while the country’s energy regulator announced a 4% increase in the price cap from October.

Government officials argue that expanding access to small-scale renewable generation can help households take greater control of their energy consumption.

Major retailers are preparing to sell the systems, with Amazon, Argos, Currys, B&Q and other retailers involved in the rollout.

The panels are not, however, a replacement for a full household solar installation. Their output is considerably smaller and depends on available sunlight.

For households that cannot install conventional rooftop panels, the new systems could nevertheless provide a relatively accessible entry point into renewable energy.

The government says the move is part of a broader strategy to expand clean, domestically generated power while reducing the impact of energy costs on households.
