Uber has officially announced the shutdown of its operations in Nigeria after 12 years of service.
The ride-hailing company said its Nigerian operations would be wound down effective September 2, 2026.
Uber announced the decision in a statement issued on Wednesday, saying it followed a thorough review of its business.
The company launched its Nigerian operations in Lagos in 2014 and subsequently became part of the country’s growing app-based transportation sector.
Uber said it appreciated the trust Nigerians placed in its platform and thanked customers for allowing the company to connect them with independent transportation providers.
The company acknowledged that its departure could affect customers who regularly used the platform for transportation.
It said its help centre would remain available until September 23 for customers seeking assistance with final account-related matters.
The exit comes against the backdrop of previous disputes involving Uber drivers in Nigeria.
TheCable reported that drivers staged protests in 2017, 2023 and 2025, with complaints including fares, commission rates and treatment.
Uber has also withdrawn from other markets across Asia and Africa since beginning operations globally in 2009.
