Residents along the Idimu-Ejigbo Road in Lagos State have raised fresh concerns over a refuse heap that they say has refused to disappear despite an earlier evacuation.
The waste has remained on the road median around the Dorcas and Silva Estate end of the road.
PUNCH reported that the heap has been present for about six months.
The newspaper’s correspondent observed that the refuse occupied approximately 150 metres of the median during a visit on Monday.
Different types of waste were found piled along the stretch, with some spilling onto the road.
The prolonged accumulation has become a concern for residents, motorists, pedestrians and business owners.
Residents have particularly complained about the offensive odour coming from the decomposing waste.
Fatai Adegbenro, a shop owner at Dorcas Bus Stop, said the situation becomes worse during hot weather.
The latest development is coming after the area had previously been cleared following an earlier PUNCH Metro report.
The return of the waste has renewed concerns about the effectiveness of efforts to keep the area clean.
Residents are seeking another evacuation and a more sustainable system for keeping the median free from refuse.
The issue also highlights the difficulty of dealing with indiscriminate dumping in heavily populated areas.
For businesses located close to the heap, the smell and appearance of the waste have become part of their daily environment.
Motorists and pedestrians also have to navigate around portions of the refuse that have spilled onto the road.
Residents want the authorities and relevant waste management operators to intervene before the situation worsens.
