NFF Crisis: EFCC Keeps ₦12bn Probe Alive After Gusau’s Resignation

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has confirmed that its investigation into the utilisation of a Federal Government intervention fund released to the Nigeria Football Federation is still ongoing.

EFCC spokesman Dele Oyewale confirmed the development while responding to inquiries about the status of the investigation.  

The investigation concerns the ₦12bn intervention fund approved by the Federal Government in 2024 to address outstanding wages, bonuses and other payments owed to players and officials of Nigeria’s national teams.  

The development comes amid a major leadership shake-up at the NFF following the resignation of President Ibrahim Gusau.

Gusau announced his resignation at a press conference in Abuja, saying he had reached the decision after consultations with his family and friends. He also advised members of his board who were willing to leave office to submit their resignations.  

The NFF subsequently confirmed the departure of Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and members of its Executive Committee.

The leadership changes came against the backdrop of growing concerns over the performance and administration of Nigerian football. The Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while the Super Falcons also missed qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.  

The financial investigation, however, remains separate from the leadership changes.

According to a source familiar with the matter, some officials linked to the intervention fund had previously been invited by investigators and provided statements. The identities of those officials were not disclosed, and there was no indication that any arrest had been made.  

The EFCC’s confirmation means the investigation will continue despite the changes at the football federation.

Gusau, meanwhile, said he remained willing to contribute to the development of Nigerian football through his experience and relationships within African football.  

The ongoing probe adds another dimension to the uncertainty surrounding the NFF as the federation moves towards a new leadership arrangement.
