Lagos Waste War: LAWMA Deploys Trucks to Mushin, Blasts Old Footage

The Lagos Waste Management Authority has said the current waste situation in Mushin is different from what is shown in some viral videos circulating online.

LAWMA Managing Director Muyiwa Gbadegesin said the agency had intensified waste collection across inner streets and communities in Mushin during the past three weeks.

He acknowledged that collection delays had occurred but said the authority had responded by deploying additional direct collection efforts.

According to LAWMA, some videos and photographs being circulated were old and were being presented as current.

The agency said the lack of dates and context attached to some of the materials could create a misleading impression about present conditions in Mushin.

To address genuine service gaps, LAWMA has been collecting refuse directly from households and communities.

It has also opened engagements with market and community leaders to identify areas requiring additional intervention.

Residents facing delays have been encouraged to report through their Community Development Associations or community leaders.

LAWMA said this would allow the authority to arrange interim direct collection.

Residents have reported seeing an increased presence of waste collection trucks.

Taiwo Adenekan, a resident of Dakobiri Street, said trucks had been entering the market and evacuating refuse.

Market representatives also said the intervention had brought greater attention to waste management challenges.

Samsideen Obawunmi, Babaloja of Irepodun Market, welcomed the engagement between LAWMA and market stakeholders.

The General Secretary of Mushin Market, Kazeem, also commended the authority for responding to complaints.

LAWMA said it would continue working with private-sector operators, market leaders and community representatives to strengthen collection.

The agency reiterated that dumping refuse on road medians and other unauthorised locations was prohibited.

It urged residents to package waste properly and use approved collection channels.

The authority also asked residents to report genuine collection failures through community structures rather than relying on outdated materials circulating online.
